ON A SCALE OF 1-10 HOW IS YOUR ENDURANCE?
In today’s blog I want talk to you about BATTLE FOR ENDURANCE!
This is one of the many devotionals taken from my new book contagious courage, that I am excited to share with you. And over the summer months, I’ll be sharing even more of these devotionals that I pray will both challenge and encourage you. You can also find these devotionals on my YouTube channel as well as on 100 Huntley Street.
In Hebrews 12:1, the Bible talks about running with perseverance the race that God has set before us in life.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
Would you say you have strong endurance in life? Where did you rate on the endurance sale? And after answering that for your physical endurance, how would you rate your spiritual endurance?
We can set a physical goal such as a fitness goal or a career goal, however, I want to ask, how are you working towards growing closer to God? Growing stronger in Him, or learning to hear his voice and discover your purpose? These are all things that help build your spiritual endurance.
Life is a Marathon - Not a Sprint
Each one of us has been given a race in our lives.
The main thing to remember is that the race we’ve been given in life, though it can be tempting to focus on just small goals in life, we need to remember that there are even bigger goals that God has set before us.
Listed below I have just a few tips to help you get through the marathon that you’re running in life right now.
The first step is simply to TAKE A STEP! A small step! Though you may have a large goal, that doesn’t mean you can accomplish it all in one day. For instance, if my goal is to start walking, my first step wasn’t even a step! Rather, my first goal was to get off my electric scooter and transition to a manual wheelchair.
So my small goal was see how long I could wheel around in my manual chair every day without getting winded. Then when I was great at the manual chair I was learning to walk with a walker, and then when I was able to walk with a walker, I was starting to see that I COULD ACTAULLY walk fully on my own.
But you see, to get to walking fully on my own, there were a few other steps I needed to take to strengthen my body and reach that goal. And you can BE SURE that the emotional battle for that physical strength and endurance was INDEED just that – A BATTLE!
And this applies for every goal that we have in our lives, especially if we want to reach them. One step at a time!
Let Go of the Things Slowing You Down
Part of the verse in Hebrews 12:1 says “…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.”
It’s important to analyze your life and take a look at the distractions that are taking us away from our goals in life, and most importantly, God. A few things that can really hinder us in our race include:
- How we spend time, or more specifically, how we spend our time on social media
- The people we surround ourselves with
- The music you listening to
- The shows we watch
What is consuming our time and attention? What voices are influencing your moods? Though all of these can be good things to help us unwind, like social media and listening to music, they can slowly start to creep in and become bad influences in our lives, especially if they are the loudest voice or your biggest distraction from what you SHOULD be doing. Or if the messaging is negative or triggering in anyway. Because before you know it, your values have shifted and you’re farther from your initial goal. And you wonder why. Just like the small “seemingly insignificant” steps will take you closer to your goals, the small insignificant steps away, lead you AWAY!
You can even see this with my example with physio. If I decide to stop going to a session here and there or miss a few days of doing my exercises and stretches, it adds up. By the end of the month, it’s not that I haven’t made progress – it’s that I’ve actually fallen behind from where I was. These changes are small at first, but they soon lead up to going backward in your race. Because your default reaction to the struggles you face, will be to quit.
Start Getting Closer to Your Goals
God has given us desires in our hearts, and goals we’re meant to achieve in life. Our lives have a purpose, and though it can be hard to discover exactly what that purpose is all the time, especially in the challenges of life that are sometimes outside of our control, it’s something we need to stay focused on so we continue with endurance and push towards.
Working on our goals is important, but we don’t need to do it alone! God has equipped us with friends, families, and even tools like self-help books to guide us.
If you’re wanting to become more sure of yourself in life and figure out your goals, check out my second book Contagious Courage, a self-help book. On top of that, I have a Contagious Courage workshop, where you can really dive in deep and learn how to live courageously.
